Above are two separate advertisement images for new product releases. The first image is of Absolut Release, a new alcoholic beverage by the Absolut company. The second image is an advertisement for AT&T's Blackberry phone. Do you feel these advertisements are effective? What type of advertising do these images represent? Who are the possible audiences for these images?

  1. Truthfully I do not find the first advertisement appealing considering I don't get what the background is trying to represent. I find the second one interesting though. I like how the two hands turn into elephants to represent India, just one of the many countries the blackberry is available in. The audience for the first advertisement is people 21 years of age or older who can drink Absolut Raspberry responsibly. Whoever has AT&T or likes AT&T will be attracted to the second advertisement. Also business people who travel from country to country who would need an international phone like the blackberry.

  2. I personally think both advertisements are very affective. The background for the first advertisement is engine parts of a car which makes it appealing to more males to drink because usually when you think about vodka, you think that its a womens drink. And the second advertisement is geared towards the different countries of the world(in this example, india with the elephants painted onto the hands that are holding the phone). This is hitting the cultural side of india with the elephants and their head dresses.

  3. Just like Ryan, I believe that both of these advertisements are pretty effective. The first one seems really seems to be trying to appeal to males with the car engine parts and stuff like that. The color scheme is also kind of appealing. The second commercial really does a great job at showing how universal AT&T is. It appeals to people who know the culture of India, and it appeals to anyone who is looking to go out of the country with their cell phones.

  4. I also agree that both advertisements are rather interesting. The background of the first one, though abstract, draws your attention long enough to interest you in the product. The second product, the AT&T blackberry, uses the bright orange AT&T color to capture your attention and uses the neutral grey of the elephants to still make the phone the focal point of the advertisement.

  5. I agree with Ryan and Suhail that both of these advertisements are generally effective, however I do not feel that the AT&T add is going to attract many new customers. The first advertisement does a good job of getting this new vodka known to those who drink vodka in a manly sort of way. The second advertisement, however, would not be a very effective ad anywhere except in India.

  6. Both of the advertisements are effective because they both catch my attention. The first one uses engines as the background and they come out from the bottle of the alcoholic beverage which represents that the engines are powered up because of the beverage. I agree with Lily and Ryan that the audience of the first ad are people who are over 21 and mainly male. The AT&T ad is an interesting and creative one because of the color scheme and the creativity of imitating two elephants with two hands. It reaches the purpose of promoting its service is universal, however, I think it implies a stereotype that India is a less developed country which internet and cell phone service are not as stable, but AT&T's service reaches far enough so even in India is covered with full signal. I think the audience are frequent travelers and business people who travel to different countries from time to time. They can still enjoy the same stable cell phone service in different places.

  7. Although I do find both advertisements visually appealing, I think only the AT&T advertisement is effective. The engine parts in the background for the Absolut doesn't make any sense to me. I can't see how the two are related. But I do like the elephants in the second ad because that actually makes sense in terms of their product. I disagree with Wannie. I don't think AT&T is implying any such stereotype. The audience for the first ad is obviously people over the age of 21, and the second ad is for anyone interested in purchasing a new cell phone or switching carriers.

  8. I see both images very effective as advertisements. The first advertisement emphasize on the characteristics of the product itself, such as its energy, which, like many classmates said, can be inferred by the abstract background design of engines. Therefore, I also agree with many of my classmates that this ad is targeted at people above 21, especially male customers. Meanwhile, the second advertisement takes a cultural move to promote the products. Although the properties of the cellphones are not mentioned specifically, it is still effective because the drawing of different culture infers the cellphone’s good compatibility and strong network signal performance. As a result, this cellphone will probably be favored by business people who go on international trips a lot.

  9. I agree with many of the previous postings about the effectiveness of the two advertisements. In the first image of the Absolut vodka, the two main colors are red and white. The contrast between these two colors definitely catches your eye. Also, red is a very dramatic, passionate color. Simply by using the color red, the advertisers are attempting to convey the type of time you will have if you drink this vodka. In the second advertisement of the AT&T Blackberry, colors also play a role in gaining the viewer's attention. The contrast between the gray coloring of the hands holding the phone and the bright orange background attract attention.

  10. I have to agree with lily about not finding the first one appealing and finding the second one rather interesting. Honestly, I don't understand the first one at all. To me, it just looks completely random and confusing. Other the other hand, the second ad was definitely a creative idea one one that I think is very effective. The idea that your phone could work in a great number of countries could easily be appealing to travels and just about anybody could be a potential customer for this product considering how common cell phones are these days.

  11. I agree with Camoran in that the first ad seems to be random and confusing. Although it is aesthetically pleasing, I cannot really recognize any car parts in it- it seems to incorporate the bottle of vodka into an abstract painting, which might be implying that Absolut is more than just an alcoholic beverage but also appeals to a higher sense of pleasure. Then again, this might just be because I have virtually no knowledge of car parts.
I also thought the finger elephants were a very creative touch in the second ad, but I did not really feel persuaded by either ad.

  12. I agree with most of the comments that the two ads are both appealing, however the second one is more effective than the first one. I also fond the fist one confusing. I just see a bottle and two words on it. I can't get the meaning of the background which actually is the soul of this ad. As for the second one, it is much more realistic. We can easily get what the ad-maker wants to say.
Regardless of whether I can get the meaning of the ad or not, I think neither ad can persuade me to buy the product. I don't know exactly why. It's just because both two doesn't give me a good sense.

  13. I think that these advertisements are effective. Both of the advertisements catch my attention. The products that they are promoting are located in the center of the ad, drawing your attention to it specifically. The use of the color red in the first advertisement emphasizes the flavor, raspberry. Like some other classmates, I don't really understand the background, but I do think it is interesting and catches your eye. The second one is very clever because of the way it turns the person's hands into elephants. The gray color of the hands matches the phone and the orange background brings out the attention of the phone. The audience for the first one would be people who are over 21 and I feel like it is geared towards men. The second ad is meant for people who probably travel a lot and who need their phone to work in various countries.

  14. The first ad is so enigmatic that I can't have any clue about what it is about. I guess most people don't identify the background image. However, the overall impression of the image is quite tense and explosive, in that it looks like factories or human bodies which blood-like liquid is flowing through. I guess this ad might just try to make a certain impression of the alcohol's explosive effect when it is released. And interestingly, the word "merda" at the bottom of the image means feces in Latin, although it might has a different meaning here. The second ad doesn't seem particularly appealing to me because I don't understand how the hand paintings and India are related to the general product sales. I admit that its ubiquitous convenience may appeal to some businessperson who travel around the globe, but it's targeting so limited people that I doubt the ad is successful in appealing to the general public.

  15. I agree with Lily, Camoran, and Sarah about the first advertisement. Frankly speaking, it makes no sense to me, especially the background, so abstract. If it had not been for Ryan’s comment, I would have no idea about what they are. It is an alcoholic beverage advertisement, so that the possible audiences should be male over 21. I am not the people who is not this advertisement intend to appeal to. That may explain why I have no feeling about this advertisement. However, I think the title on the bottom of this picture--- “Absolut Release” is definitely effective. Because it points out one of the most important reason why people drinking vodka. The second picture is one of the series advertisements of AT&T, promoting their wireless international roaming. It is hard to point out who are the target audience just from this picture. If you have seen the whole ads then you can understand. Using two hands with national symbol to hold a cellphone is the common feature for this series. I appreciate this creative idea.

  16. As my classmates comment on the first ad,I agree with them. I don't get what the creator wanted to portray with this poster or the message he wanted to bring up.However, this poster is much more eye catching than the second ad due to the red and white.background color. While the second ad is much more meaningful to me in personally. It is promoting how efficient the AT&T international roaming system. The images it uses are effectively present and explain their main purpose of the ad. It is much more straight forward and easy to understand. By using AT&T and Blackberry plan we can have better connection all over the world even in india(the elephant).

  17. From Justin: While both ads are visually appeling the at&t ad really promotes the product in a more effective way. The vodka ad only grabs your attention. It doesn't have any deeper value than just to get one to notice the product. The at&t and realy dipicts the product and service in proactive way. It's visually appealing and creative while also serving a purpose. Using the elephant hands to represent India and the range of the phone.

  18. I agree with Lily that the first advertisement is not very appealing as the background is not very clear and so most of the people would not get what it is about. The audience for the fist advertisement is people above 21 years of age. I found the second advertisement very appealing and effective. The elephants depict the cultural background of India which is one of the many countries where Blackberry works. It would be very effective in attracting business people who have to travel a lot to different countries.

  19. I personally believe that the first ad with alcohol advertisement is very effective with its red color together with the background. However, even though the vodka attracts people's attention, I personally think that the advertisement somehow lacks creativeness. The second ad actually showed the creativeness what I meant. The two elephants on hands that hold the phone actually attracted people's attention while it was able to bring out the topic of India.

  20. I agree with most of my classmates that first advertisement is not very effective, because the background is not clear it is confusing and people cannot get easily what it is about. I think first ad was made for the audience who were 21 above and also I think background is very complex but it seems to be interesting. While the second ad I found really very effective. The creator of this ad has beautifully connected the culture and the country by making elephants with hands and elephants appeals to the people who know the culture of India. Moreover, it seems to be example of globalization that one cell phone network works in more than 200 countries which show that world has connected with cell phone networks.

  21. I found the second ad interesting, and don't understand what the first ad trying to convey. The background of the first ad has a mixed-color and the meaning of the painting is not very clear. I think the second one is more effective to me. "works in over 200 countries, like India" and the elephant made by hand may suggesting that the international feature of the phone, and especially to India buyers, it's the best choice. It's gets my attention by the first sight. Also, the creator chooses a bright color orange to be the background, it's made the ad more catchy.
